Difference between Restricted and Unrestricted Free Agents
Free Agency starts tomorrow so it's important to understand the distinction between UFAs and RFAs. RFAs are free agents who have played three or fewer years for their team. These free agents have expired contracts and can receive offers from any other team. However, their original team retains the right to match any offer. If they choose not to match the offer, then they receive draft-choice compensation based on the tender they place on that player. UFAs are free agents who have played for more than four years with the team and have expired contracts. There are no limitations on their options during free agency.
